Turkey Day 2009 Cupcakes

A good friend sweet-talked our kids’ school here in Paris into making the traditional Thanksgiving Day lunch for the kids tomorrow. Additionally, the kids will be celebrating in their English classes. Another friend, an actor from LA, will be doing a Thanksgiving reading in my son’s class. And they will enjoy these cupcakes as they listen.

These are devil’s food with chocolate buttercream and cream cheese vanilla bean frosting. The tails are piped royal icing and they’ve got candy corn noses.

Wish I could join in tomorrow for the festivities!

Cupcakes we made last week for a news segment promoting Cupcake Camp Montreal a fundraiser for Kids Help Phone taking place this Sunday.

Handmade fondant decorations are the Kids Help Phone logo, the Cupcake Camp logo, the City of Montreal Logo, and the TV station’s logo.

I chose to colour the buttercream violet and yellow in honour of spring.

Twin Girl Baby Shower Cupcakes

Have you ever baked a batch of cupcakes and love them so you didn’t want to part with them? That’s how I feel about these that I made for Marie-Anne. She is hosting a baby shower for a friend who is expecting twin girls. I just LOVE how these turned out.

In French, you call a girlie girl a "fi-fille" so I decorated some of these with a play on words "fille fille" since it’s twins. And also a twist on E-=mc2 with "Joie= fille2" (that is squared just can’t get it to work on this keyboard) which means "Joy = girl squared"

The pink bib-shaped one is actually what is called a gigoteuse here. It’s like a sleeping bag that is styled like a tank top at the shoulders. They are incredibly popular here for putting babies in.

Three About Cupcakes

We had a cupcake illustrating table at the Illustration Friday Show at Open. Strawberry, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with marshmallow fondant for drawing upon with edible ink. We made 150. My arms were ready to levitate afterwards, and I still feel like I’m bathed in powdered sugar.

"Oooh, you have cupcakes!"

"Yeah, we’re trying out a new baker. Want to try it out?"

Well, sure! Who wouldn’t want to try out a new cupcake? Especially a chocolate cinnamon one? Talk about an almost perfect combination for a coffeehouse called "El Diablo", right? Well… mostly.

The cake was dry and left an almost powdery, dusty feel to my mouth with very little flavor. It was chocolate… mostly. At a guess, I’d suppose that they were trying for something close to Ibarra chocolate, but it was really too light to be noticed.

Especially under the dense, rich, almost fudgy frosting. This is where the flavor really came through, strong enough to linger in the mouth for a goodly long while after swallowing it down.

Taken together, the taste was divine (or is that devilish?) but the dichotomy in textures was really disappointing. Here’s hoping this baker improves because the combination was really unique.

I just baked these up for my friend, Jen’s birthday tomorrow. Trouble is I am in France and she is in NYC!!

A French Kiss is a cocktail made from a mixture of vodka, chambord, creme de cacao and half and half (or cream). This is a chocolate cupcake, stuffed with a creme de cacao ganache and topped with raspberry Chambord buttercream and a hand-made marzipan rose. To finish it off, I sprinkled some Wilton’s edible silver glitter. Recipe and story on my blog in honor of Jen’s b-day!
